Research Interests: Drought, Flash Droughts, Land-Atmosphere interactions, Hydroclimatology
An interdisciplinary research scientist, I hold a Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Johns Hopkins University, along with an M.A. in the same field, an M.E. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Colorado State University, and an M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Cairo University. My expertise lies in the innovative application of satellite-based remote sensing products and land surface modeling systems for hydrometeorological research. My research interests and contributions focus significantly on flash droughts, specifically in the areas of characterization, predictability, and the influence of vegetation on their evolution. I have been actively involved in projects aiming to develop a deeper understanding of flash drought dynamics, from the diagnostic classification of events to the exploration of their impact on the carbon cycle. I have contributed to the scientific community through peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and presentations at workshops and conferences, documenting research findings and dataset development. My career highlights include numerous honors and awards, such as the Best Early Career Research Award and various fellowships and scholarships. I am passionate about teaching and have had the opportunity to lecture and instruct at prestigious institutions. Under the guidance of my advisor, Dr. Zaitchik, I have gained valuable experience in coordinating research projects and ensuring their alignment with funding agency objectives. I have had the opportunity to contribute to research projects funded by esteemed organizations such as NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Energy, reflecting my dedication to advancing scientific knowledge.
