Shangyong Shi is the Pim Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Johns Hopkins University. She is interested in precipitation, hydroclimatology, surface hydrology, remote sensing and climate change. Her research primarily focuses on precipitation phase. She used in-situ observations to study the climatology and trends in precipitation phase partitioning and develop an improved phase partitioning method applicable for satellite retrievals and hydrological modeling. She also employed satellite data to analyze the temperature sensitivity of precipitation phases, highlighting the variability in vulnerability to climate change. Her collaborations include developing algorithms and validation methods for satellite snowfall retrievals. In the long term, she aims to bridge the atmospheric science and hydrology communities. Currently, she is investigating the impact of precipitation phase on streamflow in the context of climate change.
Shangyong received her Bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Science from Nanjing University, China in 2018. She received Master’s and PhD’s degree in Meteorology from Florida State University in 2020 and 2024, respectively.
